Woman holding phone filming a football match - IBM Watson powering FIFA World Cup highlights

The wait is over for global football fans, as the 2018 World Cup has arrived, with kick-off in Russia taking place on the 14 June. And to add to the excitement, some fans can now watch reels of highlights from every World Cup since 1958 as well as this year’s live tournament!

On top of broadcasting the sixty-four 2018 World Cup games in the United States, FOX Sports has partnered with the IBM iX team to build the ultimate World Cup Highlight Machine in the form of a video hub.

Using IBM Watson Media’s specialised artificial intelligence technology, the World Cup Highlight Machine can filter through more than 300 matches by year, team, player, game, and play type, so users can create their own unique FIFA World Cup highlight reel in a matter of seconds.

FOX Sports has said users will be able to search for videos from this year’s tournament as soon as every game ends, too. This means football fans will be able to re-live their favourite moments over and over at just the click of a button.
