Blueit: Innovation and the IBM Watson Build Challenge

Having taken a fascinating journey through the IT industry since their creation in 2008, Blueit is an Italian service provider with a dream to increase quality and enhance sustainability in the agricultural industry.

And last year they took part in the 2017 IBM Watson Build Challenge, to showcase their innovative solution, bioBotGuard, going on to become Global Champion.

Launched for the first time in 2017, the Watson Build program received 400 AI-based concepts and supported more than 100 partners to develop a solution on IBM Cloud, enabling them to take their solutions to market.

Blueit’s solution took drone technology with built-in high-resolution cameras and combined them with the IBM Watson Visual Recognition System. This not only made crop monitoring more efficient but took it to a whole new level.

As a result, they were able to create highly detailed maps which gave them strong insights into the specific areas of crops most at risk from harmful insects. This information meant they could target the areas in question, reducing costs and the impact on the environment.

Through a partnership with IBM, Blueit were able to combine a variety of technologies with cognitive capabilities, helping them to not only explore incredible ideas and fulfil their ambitions but bring about meaningful change – even in an industry which may once have been considered far away from the world of innovation and technology.

In just four months, Blueit’s solution became a marketable and profitable solution, ensuring a quick return on investment.
